Once you remove that hub then you can see the cam gear and pin. It might be fine, and your issue is just the hub in front of it. You should be able to pull that off with a puller. Broken cranks seem to be a very rare problem for Duramax's. People would need to have some fairly sophisticated equipment on a running engine to track how harmonics from the camshaft would eventually result in damage to the crank.Broken or shorted wiring. When you are experiencing this problem, check voltage at the starter solenoid and see if it is at B+ voltage or if it drops out.
