Early Use of the Psalms in Worship. The use of the Psalms in worship as aids to prayer goes back to the early years of the Christian Church. By the fourth century when monasteries were being established, especially in the deserts of Egypt and Sinai, the psalms formed part of the daily rhythm of worship and were interspersed with formal prayer.
