What I've read is that when the temps are low, like the 21F shown on your dash, the DEF will start to freeze and expand setting off a sensor. Once the DEF's contracted back by turning back fully to liquid, the message goes away because the sensor is no longer tripped.
I know there are a million three on the Service Exhaust fluid system problems. But mine is a little different. Apr 23, 2014 · Perform a RFQT and see if it passes, times out or fails. If it fails, turn off the T-2, unhood the T-2 from the DLC. Shut off truck and remove key. Open and close drivers door to turn off of RAP. Let the truck sit for approx. 5 min. Restart truck, re-install and set up the T-2 and perform another RFQT. Easiest way is to lower tank a bit to find the harness going to tank heater on top of tank. You find to wires coming out of the main def system harness leading to a two wire plug on top of tank. From the plug the wires continue to the sending unit. Unplug the plug and check resistance, if unusally high or an open is found it is bad.For a DEF quality code to clear, it has to run and successfully pass the Reluctance Fluid Quality Test.
